911 Bead Quilt

9/11 Beads Quilt

The 9/11 Beads Quilt will be on display during the International Bead Bazaar, available for viewing during bazaar hours. (link to bazaar hours here) After exhibiting the quilt panels for the past five years, organizers have some good prospects for a permanent display. Bead Expo may be one of the last places you will be able to see the quilt panels in their entirety. Several of the artists that have contributed a square are also teaching or exhibiting at Bead Expo. Come see the the 9/11 Beads Quilt, which will be on display in the Beadwork area of the Bazaar.

Saturday, April 14

Contemporary Beads and Jewelry
Saturday, April 14, 7-9 p.m.

Kate Drew-Wilkinson (left) and Nadine Piskadlo (right).
Free to all Bead Expo workshop students, symposium and bazaar attendees

Noted bead artists Kate Drew-Wilkinson and Nadine Piskadlo will host a slide show and discussion on contemporary lamp-work bead-making in Europe. The presentation combines the early work of many of the first contemporary American bead makers like Brian Kerkvliet, Pat Frantz, Loren Stump, Patty Walton, and Kate herself, with the contemporary works of artists from the United States and from various European countries.

Nadine, a lampwork bead maker and glass bead gallery owner, is traveling from Le Treport in Normandy to share this presentation with Kate.

Kate Drew-Wilkinson was born and raised in England. Her travels as the daughter of an English Army officer opened her to many cultures at an early age. As a teenager in Tunisia and Libya, she learned about Roman beads, and that was the beginning of it all. Kate began earning her living working with and designing bead jewelry 30 years ago. She began making glass beads in 1990.

MEMORIES IN BEADS

Forever, Borne by the Frailty of Threads
March 30-April 30, 2007

Featuring beaded garments, handbags, and decorative pieces from the LMLT collection, highlighted by an extraordinary table cover from the early 19th century. Ironically, some of the most beautiful of our beaded garments were fashioned from silk chiffon. What better reflection of the desperate exuberance of the ‘20s than a fragile network of glass and steel beads, held together by shreds of shattered silk. Pounds of beads stitched into deco swirls and fringes doomed these dresses to an early demise, but what a thrill to wear them and dance the night away! Accompanied by a fascinating collection of historical beaded bags, these pieces are sure to challenge and inspire today’s beaders with exquisite work from times past.
